Phase I – Open Data Set
Participants are invited to simulate the baseline case, in which both turbines are aligned with the flow and there is no control on either turbine. The objective of this phase is to ensure all participants can benchmark their numerical approach against a baseline, open data set, where no wake control is applied. Experimental measurements include inflow velocity, pressure variation on the wind tunnel wall, turbine power and loads for a range of tip speed ratios.
The wind tunnel measurement data of the Blind Test - Phase I test, on wind turbine wake modelling, is based on wind tunnel experiments that were conducted in the closed-loop low-speed boundary layer wind tunnel of the Chair of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at Technische Universität München (TUM). The experiments concerned two wind turbines, aligned with the flow, one downstream of the other. For Phase I, no control was applied to the wind turbine models, which were operating at constant RPM. The turbine models, designed and manufactured by TUM, were instrumented with multiple sensors and actuators and had a diameter of 1.1m. Measurements include velocity, power and loads on the turbines. A detailed description of the experimental data and all the related documentation can be accessed at the well known Zenodo repository at: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10566400.
In addition, the Blind Test - Phase I results were presented during the TORQUE 2024 Conference “Science of Making Torque from Wind”, which is an official event by the European Academy of Wind Energy (EAWE) and the related publication can be found here.
